Benefits to hang drying...

Daylight savings is in effect. Buds are visible on trees. Flowers are sprouting. People are riding bikes, going on walks, are outside gardening. The weather is warmer. It smells fresh outside. Everything within you urges you to get outdoors and never go back inside.

Yes, spring is in the air.

What does that mean for all you reusable diaper parents? It means that the time has come to dust off your diapers and hang them outside to do their drying.

Not only is it a good excuse to get outside and enjoy some fresh air while still getting your never ending list of chores done, but it is also GREAT for your diapers. There is nothing like a little lemon juice and natural sun to bleach away old stains & nothing like the smell of a fresh air diaper. (Okay, so maybe there are a few things that smell better than a clean diaper, even if it has been dried by the sun. Maybe I was just getting carried away).

So, I haven't convinced you to hang/line dry yet? You realize you can just use regular old bleach in your washing machine and you don't go around smelling your child's diaper on a regular basis?

Well, then here are a few more suggestions from beingfrugal.net to get you in the mood for a good hang/line dry:

The Benefits of Line Drying:

Line Drying Uses Less Electricity

For a frugal person, this is reason enough to line dry laundry. According to the electric use cost calculator at Saving Electricity, someone who runs their electric dryer (4400 watts) 2 hours a day, 20 days a month, spends $252 a year on electricity from the dryer alone. (That assumes the U.S. national average of 12 cents per KWH).

Now the savings from not running the clothes dryer may seem paltry, but it adds up over the years. And when combined with the other benefits of line drying laundry, I think it’s worth it.

Line Drying Preserves Clothes (and in our case diapers)

Another way line drying laundry saves money is by making your clothing/diapers last longer. Have you ever noticed how much lint a dryer picks up in the lint trap? And have you thought about how rough the dryer must be on clothing/diapers to pick up that much lint?

Line drying is very gentle on clothing/diapers, so your clothes/diapers last longer. Which means you don’t have to replace your clothes/diapers as often. Which means you spend less money on your clothing/diapers.

Line Drying Gets You Outside

It’s good to take a break to get outside once in a while.

By making a commitment to line dry laundry, you know that you will have periodic breaks during the day, where your getting out in the sunshine. And hanging clothing is very relaxing. The time you use for hanging laundry can also be your time alone with your thoughts. As a busy parent, this is something to treasure.

Line Dried Clothes Smell Great

I love the smell of clothes that have been hung out to dry. It’s a smell that commercial laundry detergents and fabric softeners can’t replicate, no matter how hard they try.

Let's see...you are already saving your family money and helping the environment by using reusable diapers, why not take another green step and hang a few diapers on display to the envy of all your neighbors?

Give it a try. I guarantee you'll love it. (And if you don't, well, you won't have to worry about returning anything or getting a full refund, and I bet your dryer will be waiting for you just where you left it).
